Nomura Securities Covered Up an "Attempted Rape Incident" — The "Crimes" Continued Even After the Robbery and Arson Against a Client
An unprecedented case: attempted robbery-murder by a Nomura Securities employee. In the July 23 appellate ruling for defendant Yusei Kajiwara (31), the Hiroshima High Court upheld the district court's 18-year prison sentence, rejecting the defense's appeal. It was an unspeakable crime committed by an employee of the Wealth Management (WM/Retail) division, which handles the sale of financial products to wealthy clients — he robbed a client of cash and set fire to their home.
In fact, while this case was on trial, another serious scandal was unfolding within the same WM division. But apparently driven by executives' self-preservation instinct — a desire to avoid the exposure of yet another scandal — the matter was hushed up and covered up.
Before revealing this scandal, let's first review the Hiroshima incident.
Kajiwara, who worked in the WM division at Nomura Securities' Hiroshima branch, stole roughly 8 million yen in cash from the home of an elderly couple in their 80s who were his clients, between July 22 and 24, 2024. Then, on the 28th of the same month, he drugged the wife with a sleep-inducing substance to render her unconscious, stole approximately 18 million yen in cash, and set the house on fire in an attempt to kill her.
The pairing of a salesman in his late twenties with an elderly client in his or her 80s is not unusual at face-to-face brokerages centered around firms like Nomura — working one's way into a client's confidence like a grandchild before making a sales pitch. This "tradition" of face-to-face brokerage sales culminated in the worst possible way.
In December 2024, President Kentaro Okuda and others held a press conference to apologize, stating that as a financial institution entrusted with clients' important assets, this was a situation that should never happen under any circumstances, and that they took it extremely seriously. He vowed to personally take the lead in restoring trust.
As a preventive measure, the company introduced rules requiring prior approval from a senior manager before visiting a client's home, along with phone calls to clients by managers before and after such visits. It also mandated the introduction of a GPS-tracking app as part of stepped-up employee monitoring.
At the first hearing at the Hiroshima District Court this past February, the company also required all WM division employees to submit credit information disclosing their debt balances and repayment status. The office was enveloped in a mood of self-restraint, and employee drinking parties required approval from senior managers.

A "Star Employee" Committed a Sexual Assault

Amid all this, this magazine's own reporting uncovered that employees of the WM division's Private Wealth Management (PWM) department had secretly held a large-scale golf outing.
The PWM department is a specialized unit within Nomura's core WM division, focused on ultra-wealthy clients such as owners and executives of listed and major unlisted companies, providing comprehensive consulting on asset management, taxation, and inheritance. Its clients reportedly include major entrepreneurs such as SoftBank Group's Masayoshi Son and ZOZO founder Yusaku Maezawa — it is the "heart" of Nomura, envied by rival brokerages.
PWM members are considered Nomura's elite corps, and there may have been an arrogance among them — a sense that "we're on another level." The large golf outing, with over 100 participants, was hosted at "Kodama Golf Club" in Saitama Prefecture, operated by the Nomura Group, and organized by then-Managing Director Yuji Kurihara, who was in charge of the PWM department.
Kurihara was the right-hand man of then-Senior Managing Director Tsuyoshi Sugiyama, the head of the sales division who apologized alongside President Okuda at the December 2024 press conference. A source at the company said that given a former WM division employee was on trial for attempted murder, holding a festive celebration showed questionable judgment, and that distrust toward the PWM department was growing internally.
But the real problem lay elsewhere, the same source revealed: on the ride home, a male employee allegedly forced himself on a female employee — groping her breasts, trying to force a kiss, and going as far as attempted rape. This individual had served as chairman of the company's employee union and was considered a future candidate for the board.
The union chairman position is a career track that has historically led to advancement — Chairman Koji Nagai himself once held the post. The scandal involving this rising star sent shockwaves through the PWM department. If it leaked externally, it would become a matter of accountability for Okuda, who had declared he would personally lead efforts to restore trust. Internally, strict confidentiality was ordered, and a cover-up was reportedly orchestrated.
The man at the center of the attempted rape allegation moved to an asset management consulting firm and was appointed as a director there. He was reportedly dismissed from Nomura, but on his new employer's website, he touts his background working in WM operations at Nomura Securities.
When this magazine asked Nomura Securities about the facts surrounding the "attempted rape incident," the company gave a curt, evasive response, stating that it would refrain from commenting on inquiries regarding individual employees.
However, the company added a statement that seemed to suggest the matter had indeed been shared with Okuda and other executives: "When we become aware of suspected inappropriate conduct by an employee, we promptly conduct the necessary fact-finding and respond strictly and appropriately based on laws and internal regulations, with reporting to and involvement of management."

The Person Responsible Was Quietly "Demoted"

There was a personnel reshuffle within the WM division this past April, and the prevailing view within the PWM department is that this incident actually influenced those changes.
First, division head Sugiyama moved to become an Executive Vice President at parent company Nomura Holdings (HD) — nominally a promotion, but combined with the role of president of Nomura Trust and Banking. Since that bank has only about 600 employees, the prevailing view is that this was effectively a demotion for Sugiyama, who had been considered one of the candidates for HD president.
Kurihara, described as the "ringleader" behind organizing the "attempted-rape golf outing," was moved to executive officer at Nomura Real Estate Holdings — a clear demotion. Managing Director Kenji Takeda, who had not been involved in the outing, was appointed as the new head of PWM.
This is the seventh year of the Okuda administration. Since his predecessor Nagai served eight years as president, there is speculation that Okuda could be replaced as early as next spring. Okuda, who came up through the overseas investment banking division, is said to have originally been cool toward the retail division, and the view has emerged that this effectively rules out any future top leadership coming from the WM division.
Under Okuda's leadership, Nomura Securities has in recent years championed a shift away from door-to-door, quota-driven sales, moving from a flow-based business model earning fees per transaction toward a stock-based model earning revenue based on client asset balances.
Framed as revenue stabilization, this sounds appealing, but it essentially means continuing to draw money from client assets regardless of how poor market conditions may be. For this to succeed, advanced consulting ability and a high standard of ethics — the kind that earns genuine client trust — are indispensable. Whether WM division employees, amid a string of scandals, currently meet the standard required for a stock-based business model is a question management should honestly reflect on.
